Man beaten on the subway with a hammer

AP: Philadelphia police have arrested a man suspected of brutally attacking a stranger on a subway car with a hammer.

Family members called police to identify the suspect after surveillance video showed the apparently unprovoked assault last week. The suspect was apprehended Tuesday night while in a mental institution.

Surveillance video shows the attacker boarding the subway with a young child about 5 years old. Detective Kenneth Roach says it appears that the man kissed the child, then told him to sit down. Then pulling a hammer from a backpack, he started repeatedly hitting a man dozing in a nearby seat. The attack spilled onto the subway platform and lasted for several minutes.

The victim, Dewayne Taylor, a 20-year-old lab tech, has been released from a hospital. He says he has no idea why he was targeted.

Many in the city are questioning why none of the other passengers on the train intervened to stop the attack.
