Look before sitting
On my way to work this morning, one of the coldest days so far for the year. As I was about to get on the subway I noticed the train was emptier than usual for a work day. I usually stand no matter how tired I am. These trains are so filthy that by sitting I subconsciously think the dirt might seep through my pants. I think I might have OCD!! Anyway, as we pulled into the next station, the subway car was flooded with the 9-5er’s. I was almost knocked down! Can you believe it. As I was saying, everyone was scrambling for a seat and maybe to get some warmth from the person sitting next to them. There was this one guy, very nicely dressed for work–he ran for a seat and didn’t even bother to look to his right or even look before he sat. The poor thing sat in something red and sticky, ewww. And not to mention there was a bum in the seat next to him. What a way to start the day. I bet the next time, he would take a page out of my book and stand like I do no matter what.

That is not nice or polite. Everybody should look out for other people – even if it all boils down to the seats in the train. Oh well, when will the world be a better place?
I also usually stand when I am using a bus or other form of public transit, like the subway. Unless I am going to be on there for a while, I simply feel more comfortable when upright. I don’t really worry about the germs, I just like having a little bit more personal space. When I do sit, I always check the seat though to avoid situations like you described
The Internet has put us much closer than ever before to finding things that are cool, so start searching to find the cool.
Your title means exactly our Vietnamese saying “?n coi n?i, ng?i coi h??ng!”
Oops, no unicode supported? It must be “An coi noi, ngoi coi huong”.
Sometimes you get lucky though. I was sitting in Taipei MRT minding my own business, which at the moment happened to be surfing with my Nokia. All of a sudden woman drops in my lap, the handle she was holding had failed and she lost her balance. She sure was red, but not sticky while she was scrambling to get up. I gave her my card, but she never called
LOL, Im sure she was too embarrassed to call. I would have been if that were me.
Wow! Great advice, always check the seat.
Hey Jake, she may not call but she’ll remember you for a life time :0
