Crackberries

I know that a lot has been said about the ubiquitous hand held wonders that have invaded our lives. What they do to our commuting experience can’t be spoken enough about.

Firstly, we need to remmber how they have put our lives in danger. Last year’s California train wreck with an engineer who was busy texting and running a red signal should have been a wake up call but I guess it wasn’t. On my commute home last week some bozo cut off the bus that I was riding on while he was busy dialing some, I’m sure, critical phone conversation. Why do people belive that they can multi-task on a busy highway where even people who give the road their full attention get creamed?

Then there are my fellow commuters whose work days begin upon waking up and never end. I have been offered a mobile device at work but have always politely refused it. For me the bus time is blissful limbo time. I read, ponder, and sleep. I want nothing else (other than not to have to be there). I certainly don’t want to have to listen to either inane or business converstaions.

My conclusion is that these devices are somehow addictive. Being unconnected, if even for short periods, is deeply distubing to some people. I should be sympathetic but I’m not sympathetic to smokers either who think that I shouldn’t mind breathing in their foul exhaust.

We’re hearing more and more accident reports where a teen was “left of center” and had an impact – many times severe or even fatal. I’d like to see the text message laws tighten up so that this stops happening!

as addicted as I am to my berry, its def safety first when on the road. I have seen the way some of my friends “multi-task” while on the highway and it amazes me that they are alive and so am I for being in the passenger seats. Its been a slow process but a lot of the states and provinces have adopted a zero text/email law which is great…they eyes are meant to be on the road not on pointless texts.

I am so with you on this point! I hate seeing people driving down the road swerving around because they drive dialing. This is not illegal in my State yet but I would defiantly support a bell making it so!

Also thank you for visiting my EC marketplace I appreciate that.

I couldn’t agree more. I love the times when I can switch my mobile off and be free from any distractions! And there is the safety angle as well. I cycle to work, so I get really annoyed when people in cars pass me too close whilst making a call.

I’m in with your rant about smoking. I do hate people/smokers without respect. They think they have the right to smoke but the rest (who are not smokers) are not entiled to fresh and clean air!

Actor Will Smith starred in “Pursuit of Happiness” (or Seven Pounds). In the film, he was busily driving and having a conversation with his fiancee at the same. When the mobile phone started ringing, he didn’t ignore the third distraction. As he was talking to the caller, he got spooked with another car. It was a very bad car crash because 7 people were killed, along with her fiancee. This could easily be a true-to-life story so I hope motorists will listen to warnings about using mobile phones while driving.

You’re so right, it I don’t have my smartphone / ipod touch with me, I feel disconnected from the world

These things really are addictive.
