On my recent trip to Montauk, NY, I stayed at Sole East Beach Motel.

Now this place is not to be confused with it’s other sibling Sole East.

When looking to book a room for the weekend I came upon this little place and no matter how hard I looked I could find no real reviews about it or photos. Even on the main website itself, they seem to only show photos and give info for the newly renovated Sole East. So I decided to dedicate a post here to be a review of the Motel and my stay.

Let’s start by saying Sole East Beach is not a renovated motel and is basically one of the old style motels. With 25 rooms and in the traditional motel style setting, this place is a simply cool getaway.

Now while it’s not a swanky, modern spa like resort, and their room doors, need a bit of a touch up, it does give you that chic, vintage feel of the old 70’s motels, yet in a clean manner. Plus it is just across the street from the beach, practically 30 seconds away. Close enough to smell the surf and hear the waves sing you a lullaby to sleep.

Sole provides you with shuttle service to and from the train station of the Bus stop if you need it. I suggest you call when you are almost there (1 hour).

The front desk staff was very helpful to me when I got there, giving me the rundown of what to do around town, events coming up, a heads up on the average closing time of stores and of course a rundown of what was going on over at Sole East.

The maids seem to be on point and did their rounds around the 2-3pm timeslot when most people where still at the beach and so I never had to worry about them walking in on me while I was taking a shower. I did my usual experiment of not leaving a tip for the first day, just to see if they would be shabby the next time they came, but they cleaned and did their job just as if I left them a $100 tip.

However as a little hint to the owners, lets work on the closet space and the bathrooms.

Sole East Beach is just a 5 minute walk away from the town center, so no need to worry about how far it is to town or the nearest ATM if you need a new swimsuit, pair of trunks, restaurant or a snack. Try the Calamari at The Point Grill and Bar it’s superb. This was my first stop when i got to Montauk, make it yours also.

There is a lot to do in Montauk even if the weather is a bit cool and the front desk clerk was happy to fill me in on the key spots, like a trip to the lighthouse, hanging out in the night at the Backyard restaurant, the walking dunes, sailing, fishing, the dude ranch or grabbing up a couple drinks and relaxing in the night on the beach around a bonfire with your friends.

While Sole East Beach may not be for everyone, it’s a good fit for those wanting to take the Montauk experience and keep that old vintage feel, just as the town. The people are nice and friendly and you just can’t help but feel welcomed.

Don’t forget to stop by Plaza Surf and Sports and say hello to Kelly, she was just way helpful and friendly and Call Lindy’s for a taxi.

My stamp of approval for eats are Dave’s Grill, Manucci’s, Harvest(East by NorthEast) and of course Point. You must have dinner at these restaurants during your trip.
