I do a lot of commutting between the New York and Washington DC areas. If there is one thing I see more than anything else, it is some clueless wonder camping out in the left lane driving the exact same speed and the person next to them. I call these people “Moving Roadblocks”. I have noticed in my travels that these “Moving Roadblocks” seem to have something very similar in common. It is not based on race or gender, as one might think. No…an overwhelming majority of these people have license plates from VIRGINIA!

SERIOUSLY VIRGINIA! Where did you learn to drive? If you see someone behind you that CLEARLY wants to go faster than you, MOVE OVER TO THE RIGHT!!!

Here are a few more characteristics of Moving Roadblocks:

  • They drive in the left lane 5 to 10 mph below the speed limit
  • They do whatever they possible can to drive directly next to the car one lane over
  • If you try to pass a Moving Roadblock, they speed up to stay even with you until you are about to ram the car in front of you
  • As soon as you get behind them again, the slow down as much as 20 mph
  • You can usually spot a caravan of cars 15-20 deep behind a moving roadblock dodging in out of lanes trying to figure out a way to pass them
  • How do you deal with a moving roadblock? Well, if I had a bazooka I would blast them clear to the great driving school in the sky. Unfortunately, I think the only way to deal with these types of drivers is through proper education. I don’t know about you guys, but I had months of Driver’s Education before I got my license. I learned the common rules of the road that are really nothing more than just plain old common sense. It seems obvious that this is something Virginians are completely without.

So it is up to us. I BEG YOU people! Please help me do whatever you can to spread these simple (and obvious) rules of the road.

  • The left lane is for passing only.
  • If someone comes up behind you, move to the right to let them pass. It is much safer for one car to move to the right than to have tons of cars swerving in and out of lanes!
  • Yes, you can drive in the left lane if there is a lot of traffic. But move over if someone wants to pass you. If there is a lot of traffic, put on your blinker to let the car know that you are trying to move over.
  • Don’t get pissed at someone for flashing their high beams at you. It is a polite and courteous way to let someone know you want to pass. It is a lot safer and nicer than tailgating.
  • Pay attention to the cars around you. Don’t drive directly next to someone. Look in your rear view mirror. If there are tons of cars on your butt, chances are its your fault! Move over!
  • Please SHARE THESE RULES as much as you can! If more people learn and live by them, we will not only have fewer Moving Roadblocks, but we will also have much safer and less frustrating commutes!
